Dinosaur Isle, Isle of Wight
In a spectacular pterosaur shaped building just over the sea wall in Sandown on the Isle of Wight is Britain’s first purpose built dinosaur museum. Here you walk back through fossilised time to the period of the dinosaurs where we have recreated the sights, sounds and smells of the era. In amongst a 1000 of the best fossils from the collection you can meet the Island famous five fully fleshed out dinosaurs including our animatronic Neovenator.
Hastings & 1066 Country, East Sussex
Hastings was home to one of the most famous battles in British history. Head to Battle Abbey and Battlefield, the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings discover the fascinating story of events behind that historic date. Nearby Pevensey and Herstmonceux are both picturesque villages each with a castle steeped in history and fascinating to explore with your family.
Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight is rich with historical links, from its birth as an Island in prehistoric times to the present day it can count dinosaurs, Romans, Kings and Queens, famous writers, poets, smugglers and inventors as some of its residents! Pay a visit to Osborne House, the holiday home of Queen Victoria, or Carisbrooke Castle, once a royal prison to Charles I. Both Newport and Brading Roman Villas are superb sites to visit for anyone interested in the Roman history on the island.
Kent Life, Kent
Kent Life near Maidstone is one of Kent's premier heritage farm attractions. With over 28 acres of rich and vibrant Kent history families can immerse themselves in its fascinating heritage as they tour the historic houses and meet the colourful characters that lived there. See the collection of historic buildings and period homes including the many original artefacts and memorabilia on display.
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Hampshire
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is a living history and there is no better or exciting way to discover and explore 800 years of maritime history. Children and adults alike can learn in innovative ways which include, games, dressing up, crafts and trails at each attraction. A day out will have them clambering the decks of HMS Warrior 1860 and HMS Victory, exploring spacious museums and flying a replica Merlin helicopter at Action Stations.
Roald Dahl Museum, Buckinghamshire
Set in Roald Dahl’s hometown of Great Missenden, The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre is aimed at 6 to 12 year olds and their families. The Museum is designed to inspire creativity in children. There are two fun and fact packed biographical galleries and a fantabulous Story Centre where you can make a movie, make up your own words, and much more. In the school holidays and at weekends there is an exciting range of workshops, events and free storytelling sessions. Closed until 10 January.
Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Hampshire
Based in Gosport, Hampshire, this fabulous museum brings submarines to life. Families can get onboard a real WW2 submarine, HMS Alliance, with a veteran submariner to hear his stories about living beneath the waves, or Peer into the only surviving midget submarine to have seen action during WW2. The museum is also home to the Royal Navy’s first submarine Holland 1 that is over 100years old.
