By combining a walk or cycle ride with other activities or local events, you’ll stretch the pennies further. There are hundreds of trails to suit all abilities along the 184-mile long Thames Path, which is part of the National Trails network. Enjoy wildlife spotting and a pub lunch for a low-cost and relaxing day out.
Visit Hampton Court in Surrey to combine learning with fun. Not only is it home to ‘the most famous maze in the world’ and stunning gardens, but there are ghostly tours, family trails and a play area to keep your whole family entertained.
Head for Longridge if you want an action-packed weekend. This outdoor activity centre near Marlow takes full advantage of its River Thames location. There’s fun to be had for all ages and accommodation on site. Activities range from water sports, such as canoeing and kayaking, to fireworks parties and other action-packed events. In fact, you’ll probably want to stay the night and do it all again the next day. There’s so much to choose from, you’ll want to go back for more!
For a family-friendly hotel on the banks of the River Thames, the newly-refurbished Runnymede-On-Thames hotel is conveniently located for Windsor and Legoland. From here you can stroll along the river to the Runnymede pleasure grounds and onto the Magna Carta memorial. Alternatively, hire one of the hotel’s electric boats and enjoy a day out spotting River Thames wildlife.
The River and Rowing Museum in Henley is a firm family favourite. Your children will love the Wind in the Willows exhibition. Plus there’s an ever-changing calendar of events to suit the whole family. Henley’s train station is a 5-minute walk away, so why not leave the car at home.
