Worthing
Worthing and the nearby area surrounding the River Adur and including Shoreham-by-Sea, Lancing, Southwick and Sompting, have so much to offer families.
One of the sunniest places in the country, Worthing’s palm tree-lined promenade lends a Mediterranean feel to this seaside resort and, in contrast, nearby Shoreham-by-Sea is a busy leisure port. Both towns are close to beaches and the beautiful countryside of the South Downs, ideal for both activity and relaxation.
Worthing is a winner of the Quality Coast Award, has five miles of flat promenade and an award-winning pier. Enjoy leisurely strolls alongside floral displays, sand at low tide, palm trees and great views of the coastline, while a walk along the pier gives a totally different view of the town, including the historic Dome Cinema. Fresh fish can still be bought from fishermen on the beach – straight off the boat.
The traditional seaside activities of bathing, fishing or building sandcastles can be done under the watchful eyes of the Beach Safety Team, on hand throughout the summer season. If you are seeking a more adventurous family break, check out the coastal cycle path between Worthing and Shoreham - or enjoy water sports activities at the western end of the beach.
The River Adur, spanned by the newly restored Toll Bridge, gives its name to the district, nestled on the coast, between Worthing and Brighton. This encompasses Lancing, Shoreham-by-Sea and Southwick. The larger of these, Shoreham-by-Sea, is an historic but thriving port with plenty of opportunities for fishing, sailing, diving and other water-based activities. Shoreham’s narrow and historical streets offer a selection of small independent shops situated on and around the High Street.
Worthing is not just a summertime location, there is plenty to do undercover. Take your family to one of Worthing’s many restaurants and experience a choice of exotic dishes from around the world. Many offer the opportunity to eat al fresco and admire fabulous views across the sea.
Live entertainment can be appreciated at the Pavilion and Connaught Theatres or the Assembly Hall, with shows such as ‘The Horrible Histories, Live on Stage’, ‘Noddy in Toyland’ and many more performed throughout the year. Families will love to visit Brooklands Pleasure Park, as well as a host of child-friendly leisure facilities in and around the town. Worthing is the ideal base for families to discover the beautiful coast and the Downs of Sussex.
